What about prenatal vitamins?
Prenatal vitamins are formulated for the extra nutritional needs of women before, during, and after pregnancy. There are many different brands available by prescription and over the counter. In terms of pre-conception and early pregnancy, the amount of folic acid in your vitamin is very important. The recommended dose of folic acid in early pregnancy is generally 800 mcg or greater/daily.
We can provide you with a sample of prenatal vitamins if you are not already taking them. If you like the sample provided, we can gladly call in a prescription for you to your pharmacy. If you have trouble getting the vitamin covered by your insurance, we can provide a different sample for you to try, or call in a different prenatal for you that is covered by your insurance.
Women who have certain medical situations may require a higher dose of folic acid. Your physician will determine if this is applicable to you.
