Can I Have Intercourse While Undergoing A Fertility Treatment?

The answer varies depending on the treatment:

IUI- There are no restrictions until the “trigger shot”.  After you take the trigger injection to induce ovulation, we ask that the male abstain from ejaculation until the day of the IUI. Afterwards, there are no restrictions again.

IVF- Prior to “trigger shot”, there are no restrictions.  Once you take the trigger injection to induce ovulation, we ask that the male abstain from ejaculation until the day of retrieval.  Afterwards, if you are planning on a fresh transfer, we recommend no intercourse until one’s pregnancy test, and if pregnant, until one’s OB ultrasound. If, however, after the retrieval, it is a freeze all embryos with no fresh transfer such as a PGT cycle, please refrain from intercourse or use barrier contraceptives until one’s menstrual period begins.

FET- Prior to the actual embryo transfer, we ask that you use barrier contraceptives.  After the embryo transfer, please refrain from intercourse until one’s pregnancy test, and if pregnant, until one’s OB ultrasound.
